▲ Exhibition Poster(Dictionaries of Korea, A New Perspective)

I've been to the exhibition “Dictionaries of Korea, A New Perspective”, the main material of "Malmoi" currently playing in theaters. It is the first exhibition to be held in Korea under the theme of the dictionary. It shows the history of the dictionary and the history of the present day, which records the Korean language and meaning that we are too used to understand its importance.
"The dictionary is the most important place to talk and write," said Moon Se-young, the preface of the Joseon Language Dictionary (1938), and "it is the synthesis of efforts to preserve and develop language." (The head of the standard Korean Dictionary (1999)." The existence of the dictionary and their purpose. The word power comes from the most basic word, and the dictionary contains all the words in one place. Language is culture, and it is written in advance, so if dictionary was born in the Joseon Dynasty, it would have become a historiographer officer.
The history of Korea's first dictionary is the "
노한사전" (1874, the director of Seoul National University's Central Library) written by foreigners in the late 19th century for learning Korean, and the Korean dictionary is the "큰사전" (1957). The history of these dictionaries is not as long as 140 years at the longest, but this exhibition will cover the importance of dictionaries retained during that period in more detail.
The dictionary has been rapidly replaced by electronic dictionaries from paper dictionaries 60 years after it first appeared due to technological advancements. In addition to the development of artificial intelligence such as deep learning technology, there will be the largest number of developments in translating languages around the world. Even though they are all replaced electronically with an on-go attitude, they should keep the meaning of the first Korean dictionary in mind.
The dictionary is an important standard used not only when translating the language of other countries but also when writing all our languages, but also in our country to search for and define words that we do not know. In this exhibition, it will be a great opportunity to see how the meanings of the words written in the dictionary vary from time to time, how languages differ from region to region, and how our times and perceptions change through the dictionary.
For your information, you can see them at the National Hangeul Museum through March 3, 2019.
