Have you ever heard about the ‘Boarding House War? Every year in the beginning of the semester, this happens to students from the provinces outside of Seoul who want to get a good boarding house around the university because Kwangwoon University does not have a dormitory. So, students from the provinces feel the pleasure of entering the university for a while but then have to worry about the house problem. Some lucky students live at their relative's home. But most students have to find a rented room near the school.
We looked for boarding houses near the school to find out about living in such a house. According to the standards, boarding houses are divided into three classes.
Gosiwon: No deposit, Common bathroom
Studio apartment (One room): Deposit, Private bathroom
Lodging: Live with owner, Meals provided

* The scope of the investigation is around Seongbuk and Seokgye Station.
* Research consists of personal visits and Internet searches.

Gosiwon (고시원)
There are many Gosiwons around the university. The monthly rent varies according to the size of the room and facilities. A Gosiwon is a lower price than a studio apartment. The room is small, and most of it is occupied by the bed and desk. If you live in a Gosiwon, you only pay monthly rent. The average monthly rent is from 200,000 to 300,000 won. Male students prefer this place.
Lately, one-room Gosiwons have appeared. These have merits of both Gosiwons and studio apartments. The monthly rent is a little expensive and starts at 400,000 won per month.

Studio apartment (One-Room 원룸)
Most students live in a studio apartment. You can easily see leaflets about studio apartments around the university. Commonly the deposit is 5,000,000 or 10,000,000 won. The Hanwool building corner is lower priced than the main gate corner. The studio apartment price is decided by various factors. So you should ascertain the nature of the room before contracting. Maintenance fees are not included in the monthly rent.

Lodging (하숙)
Students live with the house owner. Many apartments around school recruit boarders. The price is higher than a studio apartment and is at least 500,000 won per month. But you can feel the price being lower than studio apartments because food expenses and maintenance fees are included in the monthly rent. The common deposit is 500,000 or 1,000,000 won. Living with the house owner, students don’t feel inconvenience.

Jung, Joo-a   Division of International Cooperation, class ‘11
At first, I lived in a boarding house. But I changed to a studio apartment. Because I didn't eat much, I thought part of the monthly rent was a waste. Now I live near the Hanwool building and friends often come up. I prefer to do housework in divide day. For example, on Monday do laundry, on Tuesday clean the house. The electric bill is higher.

Min, Yoon-jeong  Dept. of Mathematics class ‘11
I live in a boarding house near the backdoor of the university. The landlady is kind and nice. The room is big and the facilities are good. Other boarders live here, too. A large refrigerator is shared, but it’s not inconvenient for me. I sometimes feel lonely because of living apart from my family.

Lee Seul-a  Dept. of Electronic Engineering, class ‘11
I live in a studio apartment five minutes' walk from the university. The room is good and clean.

Park Ki-beom  Dept. of Electrophysics, class ‘11
I live in a studio apartment twenty minutes' walk from the university. The room is farther than other friends. Mostly I eat out. The room is big, so living is comfortable and friends often come by. But I love my home.

Tip for looking for a rented room
1. If you contract directly from the house owner, you could contract more cheaply.
2. You must check options and maintenance fees.
3. If you live with the house owner, you could live more cleanly and comfortably.
4. If the opening day of school is close, the rented room price is lower.

Students from the provinces pay a tremendous amount. Including tuition, monthly rent, maintenance fees, food expenses and so on, students need to pay at least 700,000 won per month. The university has a plan to build a dormitory. We hope to build a dormitory for students from the provinces as soon as possible.
